Parent Education Courses for 2011

Courses run by Onewa Parents Centre:

First Aid and CPR - Tuesday 28th June 7pm to 9pm or Tuesday 6th September 7pm to 9pm.  

For all parents and other care givers, this course covers CPR on both toddler and adult dummies, and other basic first aid likely to be required in families with toddlers

Sleep and Toilet Training - Tuesday 30th August 7pm to 9pm.  

Discussions and advice on sleep problems such as changing from a cot to a bed, waking at night, coming out of the bedroom.  Also when and how to toilet train your child, including signs of readiness.  Bring your questions and issue for open discussion and receive tips from our speaker, Marie-Louise, a Plunket nurse, and other parents.

Dad's Only - Saturday 24th September 10:30am to 12:30pm.

Lot's of Mum's get to take their little ones to gym or Jumping Beans but very few Dad's get that opportunity as lots of them are working.  Chris Morris from Jumping Beans has kindly offered us his time, expertise and equipment to have a Saturday morning class just for Dad's and their crawlers/toddlers.  Chris will teach Dad's some excellent tips for playing with their little people using the specialist equipment he uses for his own business.  Due to the pratical nature of the course, spaces are limited.

Speech and Language Development - Tuesday 27th September 7pm to 9pm.

For parents of 6-18 month olds, this course covers the development of language skills, strategies to facilitate language acquisition and how feeding fits in with speaking.

Boundaries and Behaviours - Tuesday 14th June 7pm to 9pm or Tuesday 25th October 7pm to 9pm.  

This course provides advice on coping with issues such as discipline, tantrums. aggressive behaviour, sharing, and a child not responding to 'no'.  You will receive a number of interesting hand-outs covering things like testing limits and teaching self-esteem in children, as well as learning from our experienced and qualified instructor, Mary-Louise who is a plunket nurse.

Moving and Munching - Wednesday 6th July 7pm to 9pm (Moving) and Wednesday 13th July 7pm to 9pm (Munching) or Wednesday 9th November 7pm to 9pm (Moving) and Wednesday 16th November 7pm to 9pm (Munching). 

For the parents of 4-8 month olds, this course is held over two nights.  In our Moving class, Chris Morris from Jumping Beams offers practical tips on physical play with your baby to help with their development.  For our Munching class our speaker is Dr Cath conlon - paediatric nutritionist, expert for Littlies magazine and a Mum.  Come along to discus starting solids, allergies, signs of readiness and some myths about starting solids are debunked.  Both sessions are down to earth and questions are welcomed.  In addition, you are presented with a fabulous cookbook, "Baby Food and Beyond" by Alison Holst and Simon Holst (RRP $16.50), to get you started on those first meals.

Dr Cathy Conlon is a Mum and lecturer in Nutrition at Massey University.  Her area of expertise is in Infant Nutrition including Paediatric Nutrition and Nutrition of Premature babies.  Cathy will cover introducing solids and nutrition for your infant until they reach toddler stage.  She will also answer and questions you may have in an open discussion format.

Baby Sign - December (TBC) 7:30pm to 9:30pm.  Sunnynook Community Centre.

This 2 hour workshop will introduce you to the basics of teacing baby sign language to your hearing child.  You wil be shown how gestures and signs are a natural part of the way we communicate and that using this tool can help reduce frustration and tantrums.

Toilet Training - Thursday 23rd June 7:30pm to 9:30pm or Thursday 3rd November 7:30pm to 9:30pm.  Sunnynook Community Centre.

Between the ages of 18 months and 2 1/2 years most children will begin to show signs that they are interested or ready to begin toilet training.  After struggling to find answers to her own toilet training questions and in response to a deman from other parents, Laura Morley has put together the Toilet Training for Super Kids Seminar aimed at informing parents and equiping them with the knowledge to make toilet training as easy and effectibve as possible.

Magic Moments - Thursday 14th, 21st and 28th July.  Sunnynook Community Centre, Acacia Room.

Magic Moments is a 3 week evening course designed to help you learn about communication for co-operation with children agegd 0-6 years old.  Help with tantrums, non-physical discipline, developmental stages, expressing feelings and routine and structure.

Wendy Perera is a mum and trained early childhood teacher.  Her comprehensive one hour seminar will cover fine and gross motor skills, language and literacy, and social and emotional development.  It promses to be full of practical tips and fun ideas.  If you would like to know more about Walking, Ball Skills, Reading, Language acquisition, Meal Times, Bath Time, Temper Tantrums, Attachment Theory, and Age Appropiate Toys then you won't want to miss this course.

Brainwave Trust - Thursday 4th August 7pm to 9pm.  Sunnynook Community Centre.

The first three years are the foundation.  They last forever.  How the brain develops in the first three years.  The effects of stress on the unborn baby's brain.  How connections are formed.  Critical periods for learning skills.  How experience's shape the brain.  The importance of a secure attachment.  How to promote healthy brain development and attachment.
