Parents Centres are the leading providers of Childbirth Education in the country and are currently looking into providing this service to the Whanganui community.  We believe that quality Childbirth Education is crucial to outcomes in childbirth and during those first few months of parenting.

• Prenatal care and caregiver choices

• Understanding physical and emotional changes

 

Labour

• Choosing your birthplace

• Signs of labour – how to know when you are in labour

• What happens during labour

• Understanding when labour doesn’t go to plan

• The important role that dads and support people have

• Knowing your rights; decision making during labour

 

Life with a new baby

• Feeding and meeting your baby’s needs

• Transition to parenthood

• Changes to your relationship – including sexuality

• Early days at home; challenges and emotions

• Practical parenting skills and tips

• What next? Support available and ongoing parent education with Parents Centres

 

How are Childbirth Education Classes Run?

Led by diploma-qualified Childbirth Educators

• 6-8 weekly sessions

• Usually held in the evenings

• Weekend or block courses in some Centres

• Groups are small and interactive

• Classes are regularly evaluated to be meeting the needs of participants

• Parent support networks are encouraged

 

Parents Centres Childbirth Educators:

• Have a Diploma in Childbirth Education

• Are well informed with the latest pregnancy and birthing information

• Are trained in group leadership and adult education
