Childbirth Education

Timaru Parents Centre offers FREE comprehensive antenatal education courses to help you and your partner prepare for having a baby.

Our eight week evening course is taught by a qualified Childbirth Educator, so you can be sure of receiving all the information you'll need to help you understand pregnancy, labour, birth and caring for your newborn. Each course is limited to twelve couples so early booking is recommended.

The childbirth education course covers:

  • Nutrition and exercise during pregnancy
  • Labour signs and stages
  • Pain relief options and interventions
  • The birth process and birth video
  • Making an informed decision on Vitamin K and vaccinations
  • Breastfeeding and newborn care
  • Postnatal depression
  • A tour of birthing suites and postnatal rooms at Jean Todd Maternity Ward at Timaru Hospital

Classes run continually throughout the year in eight week blocks on Tuesday evenings.
