Getting Involved in Your Community
GeJoin a Neighbourhood Support Group
Neighbourhood Support aims to make our homes, streets, neighbourhoods and communities safer and more caring places in which to live.
Neighbourhood Support is an independent organisation that works closely with the Police and many other organisations in your community to reduce crime, improve safety and prepare to deal with emergencies and natural disasters.
Neighbourhood Support encourages people to be good neighbours and to get to know each other in the friendly environment of a Neighbourhood Support Group.
Neighbourhood Support Groups:
- Encourage neighbours to talk to each other and to share information that will help reduce the risk and fear of crime in the local area such as burglaries, car crime, graffiti, vandalism, violence and disorder
- Help foster a sense of community spirit, where everyone is respected and valued
- Improve the safety features and appearance of the neighbourhood
- Decide on ways to handle any civil emergencies that may occur
- Know when and how to contact Police, other emergency services or support agencies
Many Neighbourhood Support Groups organise barbecues and other enjoyable social or cultural events. You can find out more about Neighbourhood Support on the Internet site www.ns.org.nz or by emailing
or by phoning 0800 4neighbours (0800 463 444).
