Childbirth (Antenatal) Education

Childbirth Education has been the foundation of Parents Centres New Zealand Inc since our "conception" in 1952. Today we are the largest provider of Childbirth Education, delivered across what is one of the largest parenting based networks and infrastructures in the country. Our exceptional team of educators are professional, qualified and motivated to deliver value to women and their families during the exciting and complex period prior to birth, equipping and empowering parents to realise the benefits of our mission:

Positive birth experiences and informed parenting in a community where parents are supported and highly valued in their role.

Attending Childbirth Education classes gives parents and support people the opportunity to meet other expectant parents and develop friendships with people who are in a similar life stage. Through a series of 6 -7 weekly classes the Childbirth Educator provides a range of information and facilitates discussion to support parents to make informed decisions about pregnancy, childbirth and the care of their newborn baby.

There are some key things that should happen early on in your pregnancy.

The first is to choose your Lead Maternity Care person (LMC). This could be a midwife, GP or obstetrician. It can often help to talk to other people about their experiences and choices of LMC. Whoever you choose, make sure they are someone you feel comfortable with and someone who will try to support your choices for the type of birth you would like to have. Shop around and ask lots of questions.

Enrol in Childbirth Education classes. While you do not need to attend until further into the pregnancy (around 26 weeks) classes can fill up quickly so it is essential to book in early.

Access information on nutrition for optimum health outcomes for both you and your baby during your pregnancy. There is a range of foods that pregnant woman are advised to avoid. Your LMC will also be able to advise you. Alcohol and drugs should be avoided during pregnancy.
