Baby and You

This is a five week course designed especially for parents of newborns to 4-month-old babies, and also includes a First Aid Evening that working parents can attend.

Courses are currently held on Wednesday mornings, 10am – 12pm at Sunnynook Community Centre and Friday afternoons 12.30pm - 2.30pm at Meadowood Community House.

Infant feeding 
  • Session Objective:
    • Increase confidence about breast feeding.
  • Session Contents:
    • Infection
    • Breast care
    • Expressing
    • Storage & Sterilisation
    • Weaning basics and options available
    • Feeding frenzies and growth spurts.

Health and growth
  • Session Objectives:
    • Provide the knowledge that will allow mothers to cope in certain situations
    • Parents will be able to identify problems they are currently having or may have, and how to deal with those issues also.
    • Provide information on the services offered by Plunket.
  • Session Contents:   
    • Sleeping & feeding
    • Colic   
    • The 4-8pm unsettled period
    • Rest & relaxation (self care) for mother & Baby
    • General mother craft skills
    • Plunket services – nurse, family centre
    • When to go to the doctor and when to go to Plunket.

Relationship awareness

  • Session Objective:
    • Allow new mothers to recognise the physical and emotional changes that are taking place in their lives.
  • Session Contents:  
    • New relationships within the family (mother, father, baby)
    • Change to one salary
    • Self esteem
    • Going back to work and being a mother
    • Postnatal depression
    • Emphasising the flexibility and compromise that is needed to keep relationships harmonious and stress free
    • Sex after childbirth – does it exist? (How there generally has to be increased co-operative efforts to keep the romance and spice in your sex life and to even have sex, the effects of pregnancy, breastfeeding and tiredness on libido and changes to your own sexuality)

Touch (Baby massage)
  • Session Objective:
    • A fun relaxing session on infant massage and the benefits for parents and their babies.
  • Session Contents: 
    • The importance of touch
    • Massage demonstration
    • Practical points

Child development

  • Session Objective:  
    • Describe the physical, language, social & emotional stages of your child from 0-6 months.
  • Session Contents:
    • Sensory development
    • Play
    • Age appropriate toys
    • Baby safety needs.
