Parenting courses are run regularly by Bays North Harbour Parents Centre, and Bays members are also welcome to attend courses run by the Onewa and Waitemata branches of Parents Centre. See below for details of upcoming courses.
Speech and Language Development (Onewa)
Date: Tuesday 8th May 2012
Time: 7.30pm - 9pm
Venue: Birkenhead Library
Details:
For parents of 6-18 month olds, this course covers the development of language skills, strategies to facilitate language acquisition and how feeding fits in with speaking.

Baby Sign
Date: Wednesday 9th May 2012
Time: 7.30-9.30pm
Venue: Sunnynook Community Centre
Details:
This 2 hour workshop will introduce you to the basics of teaching
baby sign language to your hearing child. You will be shown how gestures and signs are a natural part of the way we communicate and that using this tool can help reduce frustration and tantrums.
Cost: $30 members ($60 non-members)

Boundaries & Behaviour (Onewa)
Date: Tuesday 12th June 2012
Time: 7.30pm - 9pm
Venue: Birkenhead Library
Details: This
course provides advice on coping with issues like discipline, tantrums,
aggressive behaviour, sharing and a child not responding to “no”. You
will receive a number of interesting handouts covering things like
testing limits and building self-esteem in children as well as having
our experienced and qualified instructor Mary-Louise who is a Plunket
nurse.

Tiny Tums (previously Munching)
Date: Wednesday 20th June
Time: 1pm - 2.30pm
Venue: Sunnynook Community Centre
Details: A
fun and informative course about feeding your child. This is for
parents of children aged from 4+ months. Dr Cathy Conlon is a Mum and
lecturer in Nutrition at Massey University. Her area of expertise is in
Infant Nutrition including Paediatric Nutrition and Nutrition of
Premature babies. Cathy will cover introducing solids and appropriate
nutrition for your infant until they reach the toddler stage. She will
also answer any questions you may have in an open discussion format. As
part of this course you will also receive a FREE copy of Alison Holst’s
Recipe Book ‘Babyfood and Beyond’ and lots of handouts with ideas to
help you fill those Tiny Tums.

Tinies to Tots
Date: Wednesday 18th July
Time: 7.30-8.30pm
Venue: Sunnynook Community Centre
Details:
Wendy Pereira is a mother and trained early childhood educator. Her one
hour seminar will cover fine and gross motor skills, language and
literacy and social and emotional development. It promises to be full of
practical tips and fun ideas. If you would like to know more about
walking, ball skills, reading, language acquisition, meals times, bath
times, temper tantrums, attachment theory and age appropriate toys then
you won’t want to miss this course.

Sleep and Toilet Training (Onewa)

Venue: Birkenhead Library
Details: Discussions and advice on sleep problems such as changing from a
cot to a bed, waking at night, coming out of the bedroom. Also when and
how to toilet train your child, including signs of readiness. Bring
your questions and issues for open discussion and receive tips from our
speaker, Marie-Louise, and other parents.
