At Central Auckland Parents Centre, we offer the following Parent Education classes:

Practical Parenting
A fun and informative session for expectant parents

Central Auckland Parents Centre is delighted to announce that we have secured funding to run two amazing new courses - 'Parenting with Purpose' and 'Magic Moments'.  We will be running these courses over the coming months.  See course details below - dates and times to be announced.

Practical Parenting

A fun and informative session for expectant parents.

At this session you will learn about the following:

Bedding/Safe Sleeping
Learn useful techniques for making up a cot/bassinet, what linens are appropriate and how best to sleep baby safely.

Bathing Baby
Enjoy a delightful bathing demonstration using a newborn baby, learn how to hold baby correctly and strategies for making bath time a pleasurable experience.

Car Seats
A qualified speaker will introduce you to the different car seat options available and explain in depth how to best use these to assure your baby travels safely in your car.

Winding, Swaddling and Settling Baby
Our experienced facilitators take you through a number of techniques for winding babies, swaddling baby and why we do it, Learn how to determine when your baby is tired and some helpful hints on settling them to sleep.

Clothing and Nappies
We will cover what you will need for clothing, some helpful tips on things to avoid, also the "how to" of nappies and we are always happy to answer the many questions surrounding these topics.

Baby and You

Learn key tips to develop and care for your baby and yourself during the first 4 months.

Feeding & Sleeping 
A speaker from Plunket will teach you how to determine your baby's ‘tired signs' and other useful feeding and sleeping tips for surviving and enjoying the first months.

Infant Health 
A family doctor will cover common infant health complaints including nappy rash, fevers, cradle cap, ear infections, thrush and answer your questions.

Postnatal Exercises 
A specialist in Women's Health will present a highly motivational demonstration of essential postnatal exercises and give you tips on improving your Pelvic Floor muscles.

Postnatal Depression 
A psychotherapist will facilitate a group discussion on the challenges of motherhood, and will develop strategies with you for an enjoyable and satisfying mothering experience.

CPR and First Aid 
Learn how to execute CPR and choking procedures for babies. General first aid, issues such as poisons, burns and accidents will also be discussed.

Child Development 
Learn major developmental stages for your baby and ideas to stimulate their mind. In this fun session you will learn to craft inexpensive toys for your baby's enjoyment.

Courses consist of five morning sessions and are usually held at Athol Syms Hall, 11 Griffin Ave, Epsom.  Courses for 2010 commence on the following dates:

Introducing solids plus early development and safety - now they are mobile.

Two fun and informative sessions for parents of children aged 4-8 months.

• The development of language and intellect and how you can stimulate this.
• Introducing solids and establishing
good nutrition.
• How to prepare first foods and ideas on what foods to give your baby at different ages.
• How babies learn through play and age approp

• The development of fine and gross motor skills and how you can assist.

Tinies to Tots

Three fun and informative sessions for parents of children aged 9 to 18 months

Session 1

  • Child Development: How play can stimulate learning and development; environment and equipment safety
  • Sleeping Issues: Sleep requirements for older babies, routines and transition from two to one daytime sleep

Session 2

  • Caring for First Teeth: A qualified dental therapist will cover tooth development, caring for first teeth and preventing tooth decay
  • Fitting First Shoes: Learn how to identify correctly fitting shoes, allowing for protection, support and room for growth

Session 3

  • Nutrition: Developing good eating habits for toddlers and moving to eating with the family
  • Mainly Toys: A presentation of age appropriate toys, games and activities

Toilet Training for Superkids

Are you preparing to toilet train your toddler?


Come along to an interactive, practical and informative toilet training seminar with lots of tips and strategies to make it easier. Covering everything from when and how to start, equipment needed, using reward charts and different methods that you can adapt to your child/family.

Presented by Laura Moreley.

The next course is set for Thursday, August 5th at the Onehunga Community Centre, 83 Church Street, Onehunga.  The session runs from 7.00pm-9.00pm.

Magic Moments

Magic Moments is a 3 week evening course which will help you to focus on using non-physical methods of discipline and encourage parents and caregivers to build strong relationships with their children whilst setting clear boundaries.

Module One

  • Understand  and have an overview of the course content.  
  • Understand the 6 Principles of Effective Discipline and how they apply in your own life.  
  • Identify and understand the developmental stages and milestones of pre-schoolers.  
  • Identify a wide range of positive and effective communication techniques.

Module Two

  • Identify communication techniques to engage children's cooperation.  
  • Understand the importance of routine and structure and have practical strategies for use in your own life.  
  • Understand why it is important to allow children to express their feelings.  
  • Understand how and why pre-school children express their feelings.  
  • Identify a range of practical techniques for helping children express and deal with their feelings.

Module Three

  • Understand the difference between discipline and punishment.  
  • Identify some negative outcomes of physical discipline of children.  
  • Identify some negative behaviour triggers in children.  
  • Identify a wide range of non-physical discipline techniques and ways in which they can be used within the family setting.

    Course Costs: 

    $45/per couple - member 
    $55/per couple - non member

    Parenting with Purpose

    Parenting with Purpose is a 6 week evening course designed to help you think more actively about the way you parent.

    Module One 

    • Understand the meaning of 'conscious parenting'.  
    • Identify conscious parenting skills that may be applied to individuals.  
    • Understand and identify how our personal qualities help determine our effectiveness as parents.


    Module Two

    • Understand the connection between parents meeting their own needs and conscious parenting.  
    • Understand how families are affected when parents do not make their own needs a priority.  
    • Identify features of healthy relationships and have an understanding of how these can be applied to your own life.

    Module Three
    • Identify your children's main needs.  
    • Understand some causes of stress in adults and children and identify some useful strategies for reducing it.  
    • Identify strategies parents can use to engage their children's cooperation.

    Module Four
    • Understand the difference between discipline and punishment.  
    • Identify and understand the features of the three main parenting styles and temperaments of children.  
    • Identify common causes of challenging behaviour in children.

    Module Five
    • Identify triggers of challenging behaviour in children.  
    • Understand how anger and conflict in the family can negatively impact children's behaviour and identify some effective anger management strategies.  
    • Gain an understanding of a wide range of non-physical discipline techniques and identify ways they can be used within the family setting.

    Module Six
    • Identify personal qualities you would like your children to have as adults.  
    • Identify a wide range of strategies for strengthening the family. 
    • Create a vision and action plan for the future.

    Course Costs: 

    $75/per couple - member 
    $85/per couple - non member
